Mike Mansfield Fellowship Program

 

Outline

The Department of State in the U.S. has conducted the Mike Mansfield Fellowship Program under the Mike Mansfield Fellowship Act since 1996, in order to develop U.S. federal government officials with a deep understanding of Japan. Fellows are selected from wide range of federal government organizations to be sent to Japan. In cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the NPA coordinates assignments of fellows in the accepting ministries and plans and implements common programs such as orientations and study tours.

 

Activities

The 27th fellowship has started a practical training program
10 fellows arrived in Japan in July 2023 for the 27th program and took a training course on Japanese language and culture conducted by the Mansfield Foundation in cooperation with Ishikawa Prefecture for two months. After that, they are to be engaged in practical training, being involved in daily duties at ministries, private companies and other organizations, for about 10 months from September 2023 to June 2024.
  On August 29, 2023, the NPA held an orientation for the program, in which Ms. Kawamoto Yuko, the President of the NPA, gave a speech and encouraged them.
